Cosmetic dentistry offers several great options for whitening teeth. However it is important to consider that only natural teeth can be whitened, and existing dental work such as fillings, crowns, and bridges will maintain their original color and cannot be changed through chemical whitening. Therefore, it is important to consult with your dentist to evaluate whether you are a good candidate for chemical whitening prior to doing so.
IN-OFFICE WHITENING
In-office whitening is a very effective method of whitening natural teeth, as they use the strongest concentration (about 35% - 40% solution) of whitening solution. The procedure consists of complete retraction and protection of the cheeks, and placing a protective barrier on the gums, then applying several rounds of whitening solution to the surfaces of the teeth. The whitening solution used at Miracle Dental is associated with extremely low levels of sensitivity both during and after the procedure, unlike many other whitening systems currently on the market. Appointments for this procedure typically take about 1—1.5 hours, during which the patient can comfortably listen to music, read, or watch a show on their phone. Results of this procedure typically last an average of 6 months to 1 year.
AT-HOME WHITENING TRAYS
This is another great method for whitening the teeth, and consists of creating custom bleaching trays for the patient so they can whiten at their own pace at home with medium strength (10% - 20%) bleaching solution. This method is great for patients who have typically sensitive teeth, because they have greater control on how often they whiten. Another benefit of this treatment is that patients can re-use their custom trays every few months when they feel that they need a touch up. We recommend using the whitening gel every day or every other day for the span of about two weeks, or until desired results are achieved. Our office offers two options, for trays that can be worn overnight, or for trays that can be worn during the daytime.
OVER-THE-COUNTER WHITENING STRIPS
This whitening method is widely accessible to patients at various pharmacies, without requiring any prescription. Whitening strips are the most inexpensive option, but they are also the weakest (about 10% strength solution) and least effective method for whitening. They also do not protect the gums and adjacent oral tissues, so some may find that their gums whiten as well for a few days. However they do produce minimal results for patients looking for minor improvements in the color of their natural teeth.
COMBINATION TREATMENTS
Patients looking for the most dramatic improvement in the brightness and color of their smile may consider combining whitening treatments for the most optimal results. The most common methods to combine are in-office whitening followed by custom at-home trays to further improve and maintain the brightness of the teeth.
